I wouldn't necessarily say that was a fair result because Crewe are no great shakes, but today saw Town just not quite good enough.
David Mirfin was back (solid as a rock all game), and there was a debut for Shane Killock (bit dodgy to start with, but ended up looking very promising indeed). Danny Schofield made the bench, and Boothy and Luke Beckett started up front again.
Town actually had the first chance of the game, when Boothy capitalised on some sleeping defenders, nipping in and rifling in a shot that missed Ben Williams goal by a whisker. But that was as near as Town got, and Crewe were quick to take the lead (16 minutes). A lovely through ball played in their new loan player Lee Barnard and he made no mistake, an almost Beckett-like finish beating Matt Glennon (and no he was not offside, I was almost in line with him).
Mirf nearly equalised when a bullet header from a corner forced a save from keeper Williams.
Then complete and utter disaster. A Ball over the top - Matt Glennon came out of his box to try and clear his lines, missed completely, and Eugen Bopp wont have an easier goal to score, tapping it into an empty net. 2-0 down, and no way back, I just couldn't see it.
**NOTE TO THE "SUPPORTERS" WHO BOOED GLENNON DURING THE GAME - IT SOLVES NOTHING, AFFECTS THE PLAYERS AND IS FODDER FOR OPPOSITION SUPPORTERS. SAVE YOUR CUSSING FOR HALF / FULL TIME INSTEAD (IF YOU MUST)**
Second half Town were a little brighter, but just seemed to lack that final finish. Only longish range efforts from Matt Young (who had a better game) and Chris Brandon (superb, yet again) to note.
But 2-0 it remained, a disappointing result, and my poor Nephew Luke has yet to see Town score, let alone win on his 3 visits to watch Town with me. It broke my heart when we got in the car and he said "...sorry Auntie Ju, its my fault Town didn't win isn't it...". Bless! Poor little thing. I did my Auntie-duties thing by reassuring him it wasn't his fault at all, but I'm not sure he was completely convinced (he is only 10 after all)!
