Huddersfield Town 1-1 Oldham Athletic

A bumper crowd of nearly 17000 saw Town continue their good form with an excellent draw against Oldham.

The visitors took the lead in the 6th minute, and it was a goal right out of the top draw. Mark Allott let fly from 25 yards with an unstoppable shot that had Alex Smithies grasping a thin air.

Town had the best of the rest of the play, but it took until the 67th minute for the equaliser to come, and it was Michael Collins who beat the defender and scored with a wonderful finish.

Apologies for the recent inactivity, it has all been for a purpose. Have been toying with the idea of moving this site elsewhere for a while, been experimenting a bit!! Blogger has been a good home for ATT for the last 2 1/2 years, but I have encountered the odd problem here-and-there, and have found the tools a bit restrictive at times. Changing the format, even just to freshen up the site has proved impossible.

Nothing has been decided yet though, we remain here for now.

Afte Fridays blip, Town go firmly back on track with a win against 4th placed Scunthorpe.

After a goaless first half, it was former Scunthorpe player Jim Goodwin (you might know) who opened the scoring, rising highest to meet a Gary Roberts corner.

It looked like it would stay that way, only for Town to wrap things up with virtually the last kick of the game through Gary Roberts.

After managing to get over for the last 6 home league matches in a row (I've been to 8 out of 11 this season so far) today sees the first of 3 in succession I will be absent from (dratted work), with Scunthorpe our visitors.

Town need to pick themselves up after the Boxing Day defeat at Carlisle, and I'm sure that Jim Goodwin will want to impress against his old teammates. Fingers crossed for 3 points.

Not much Christmas cheer to be found for Town as they were comprehensively beaten by Carlisle.

A first half strike from Danny Graham and second-half efforts from Michael Bridges and Graham Kavanagh enough to make a disappointing Boxing Day for the trtavelling faithful.

Huddersfield Town 2-0 Hereford United

The Lee Clark era gets off to the best possible start with (in the end) a comfortable win against Hereford.

Playing 3-5-2 to start with it is clear that the new regime will not be wanting us to play hoofball - I've never seen us play it so much on the floor, it was lovely stuff at times.

Despite all this we could not find a way through first half, and it took a change of formation to bring the goals. Jevons came on for Berrett and Cadamarteri for Craney and Town went 442.

The breakthrough can almost immediately, a goalmouth scramble ending with Cadders getting the ball to Nathan Clarke who blasted home from 2 yards out.

The second goal was pure gold. A fantastic piece of play, Roberts and Jevons playing a double 1-2 while the Hereford defence stood round like statues. Roberts low drive into the corner making the points safe.

It wasn't all one way traffic, Andy Butler, Robbie Williams and Nathan Clarke all tried to contrive chances for Hereford, but Alex Smithies (who deserved his MOTM nod) held firm.

As the Liverpool-Glory-Hunting-Sheep of eons ago that I was, Terry Mac was one of my very favourite players back in the day, and this has made my Xmas already - good work by Lee Clark and Dean Hoyle.

I am so excited ahead of tomorrow, and so is Lee Clark.

Southend United 0-1 Huddersfield Town

Gerry Murphy and Graham Mitchells caretakership came to a end in fine fashion, with an excellent performance away at Southend.

Iam Craneys 48th minute effort enough to seperate the two sides, Michael Collins played the ball across for a simple tap in.

Southend had a chance to equalise with a penalty 7 minutes from the end - a Robbie Williams foul on Kevin Betsy - but Alex Smithies was equal to Junior Stanislas, to the delight of the 367 travelling Town fans.

Who would have thought this 6 weeks ago. 10th in the league, only 3 points behind Leeds in 9th and 6 points away from the playoffs. We could not have dreamt of such a thing when Ternent was manager, Gerry and Graham have done a marvellous job since we got rid.

I'm confident that Lee Clark and his backroom staff will continue this good run.

Short of being officially introduced tomorrow (I'm not expecting any EmptySeatGate type surprises) Lee Clark will be our new manager - and contrary to my comment of a week ago, I am delighted (I'll expand on this in a moment). Please notice the parting shot by one G Roeder at the end of this report:

I never liked Glenn Roeder much in the first place, now he has the brass neck to insinuate that Town are only a stepping-stone to Clarks dream job of managing Newcastle. I for one feel if he does well enough with us to deserve such a position I would be proud at a job well done.

As for my assertion last week "...what has he done to deserve this..." I am going to be big enough to say I was more than a tad hasty with that. It was a knee-jerk first over-reaction to the news Big Sam might not be coming to Town after all. On the contrary now, I think this is an excellent appointment and would warmly shake Dean Hoyle by the hand if I had the chance (I'd probably give him a hug actually if truth be known, as I am that sort of girl **laughs**).

The one thing that amuses me slightly is the realisation that me and Lee Clark actually have something (a bit tenuous admittedly) in common - we were both born in exactly the same week in October 1972 (Lee is 4 days my junior).

I am really feeling good about this, just know this will work - whereas when ST took over I knew it had disaster written all over it.

This of course follows on from the much touted story from last week. I did say Dean Hoyles reaction said far more than Glenn Roeders (GR looking a bit of a fool in hindsight if this comes off).

I will be delighted when this is official, it looks like Dean Hoyle has definitely targeted Lee Clark deliberately, and lets face it he does meet all the "Young and Dynamic" credentials we were seemingly looking for.

This appointment, when confirmed, fills me with much, much more optimism than the when Stan came here, much more.

Huddersfield Town 2-1 Walsall

Another late-late show from Michael Collins (a nice habit to have) gave Town all 3 points - deservedly in my opinion, after some outragous time-wasting from Walsall.

Town in front at half time thanks to a Gary Roberts penalty. Michael Collins surging run in the box ended abruptly by a shove in the back by Walsall defender Rhys Weston - the referee had no hesitation - and up stepped robbo to cooly slot the spot-kick home.

Walsalls equaliser was a beauty. Alex Nicholls shot from outside the area easily beating Alex Smithies (who was making his first league start in over 12 months) - it would have beaten Matt Glennon and most other goalies for that matter, that well was it placed.

Thanks to Walsalls time-wasting tactics it looked like a stalemate, until Dann Cadamateris header found Ian Craney who played the ball into Michael Collins and after drawing the keeper out of his goal made no mistake - joy and rapture abound!!!

Very strong New Manager rumours abound, with Sky Sports News insistent that former Newcastle defender and current Norwich assistant Lee Clark set to be offered the job. Quite what he has done to deserve it is beyond me, maybe someone can fill me in. That is despite Norwich manager Glenn Roeder issuing this statement of disgust.

The THIRD (and hopefully for a few seasons the last) running of....

THE HUDDERSFIELD TOWN NEW MANAGER STAKES

A look at the runners and riders for the Town hotseat. I cannot believe it has come to this 3 times in 18 months, ah well - in no particular order:

Nigel Adkins - Currently manager at Scunthorpe, not really sure why he would want to join a club lower in the league than his, unless there has been a bust-up. Got the pedigree in this Legaue having clinched the title 2 seasons ago. Acording to some, it's a done deal apparantly - he will be our next manager.

Conclusion: Would be a little undewhelmed if the job went to him. Doesn't strike me as a dynamic candidate, not at all. We shall see.

Mark Robins - Currently in his first managers job at Rotherham. Given his well known playing career, no doubt he will have picked up a trick or two from Sir Alex along the way. If not for successive points deductions The Millers would be a lot higher up League Two, he has done well with little to do it with. Results have tailed off of late, maybe his mind is on other things. Alledgedly the already-employed-manager to approach DH directly.

Conclusion: This would be of a bit more interest. Meets all of Dean Hoyles criteria, and I would be happy if the job went to him.

Sam Allardyce - Without a doubt, the class act on this list. His achievements at Bolton took him within a gnats eyelash of the England job not long ago. Ex-Town, so aware of our history - any eye catcher of an appointment if it came off.

Conclusion: This is one manager that if interested Dean Hoyle should give him whatever he wanted. I have no doubt we would be in the Championship sooner rather than later with Big Sam in charge. Must be topping a lot of Town fans wishlist.

Michael Appleton - The dark horse out of the contenders. No management experience, currently learning his trade with the reserves at West Brom. Tipped for a very bright future in the game.

Conclusion: If appointed would be huge gamble in my opinion. Reputation counts for a lot granted, and I hear others in football have highly recommended him. A big risk nevertheless.

Jim Gannon - Appeared on this list the first time, and I'm no less of an admirer now. Got Stockport promoted through the League Two play-offs last season and now flying high in our division. Fits the "..young and dynamic.." ideal perfectly.

Conclusion: This is one candidate worth pushing the boat out for in my opinion. I mentioned previously that I likes the way his sides play, he would be perfect for us. Come on Dean, you know it makes sense!!

Aidy Boothroyd - Virtually unknown when taking control at Watford, managed to get them in the Premiership and to the semi final of the FA Cup. Since vacating the position has been the name on a lot of Town fans lips, although the Charlton job may have scuppered any chances we had of him coming to us.

Conclusion: Bit obvious this one. AB has been associated with every vacancy going at the moment. Wouldn't be against his appointment, but feel it is a coming a too little soon since leaving Watford.

Town were unlucky to be second best in this. A first minute lapse of concentration costing us the points, as Adam Boyd nipped in to score.

An entertaining game nevertheless, the nearest Town came to scoring was through several goalmouth melees, and several players (Jevons, Craney) seemed to leave their shooting boots at home. Phil Jevons was especially poor, wandering aimlessly offside time and again.

Town should have had a stonewall penalty in the first half, a handball (and it was clear as day) missed (or disregarded I'm not sure) by the officials - you just knew it would not be our day.

A case of "..it's that man again..." as for the second week in a row Michael Collins scores the winner. After a goalless first half Collins was on the end of some good work by Gary Roberts.

Drama to follow though as a late tackle by Jon Worthington awarded Brighton a penalty. Matty Glennon saved Nicky Forsters effort and also the follow up. Brighton nearly equalised near the end, when Bradley Johnsons free kick hit the crossbar, but all 3 points were Towns.

Michael Collins has now written his name alongside that of Dave Cowling in the annuls of Town folklore following his 93rd minute winner at Elland Road. A goal that will become as famous as Cowlings of 25 years or so ago being all the more brilliant as Collins wasn't getting a look in under previous manager Stan Ternant - I'm delighted!

Town were behind after only 3 minutes, some lax defending letting in Robert Snodgrass. Town equalised straight from the kick off, Joe Skarz scoring his first goal for us on what was his 50th appearance (a goal all the better for having not a single Leeds player getting a touch in the build up).

Drama was to follow in injury time, when it looked like honours would be even. Danny Cadamarteris run and cross met in acrobatic fashion by Michael Collins who made no mistake - oh happy day!!!

As brilliant as this result is (my sore head today testament to that) I cannot begin to tell you how pleased I am for Michael Collins. It's my belief that if Stan Ternant was still at the helm he would not have played, as Collins was not getting a sniff of first team action under his regime. We probably would have had a thrashing of Peterborough proportions as well to boot, totally justifying Dean Hoyles decision to get rid. What a shame Gerry cannot be persuaded to take the job full time.

Derby time tomorrow with our much anticipated game away at Leeds. Spoke to 2 Leeds fans and both think we will be thrashed tomorrow which is typical. I know that Gerry, Graham and the lads will be up for this and if we do happen to lose I honestly believe it will be by no more than one goal. Good grief, this can never happen. I trust Dean Hoyle to take no notice! Gus Poyet however is a different matter. The footballing brains behind Dennis Wise at Leeds, and although the wheels fell off a bit when he was Ramos' number 2 at Spurs he would be a quality appointment.

FA Cup First Round

Huddersfield Town 3-4 Port Vale

A spectacular capitulation at The Galpharm as Town surrendered a comfortable looking 3-1 lead in the final 10 minutes to go out of the FA Cup at the first time of asking.

Despite being behind to a Louis Doods 27th minute effort, Town had put themselves well on top with goals from Michael Collins, Ian Craney and Robbie Williams. But in a remarkable turnaround we took defeat from the jaws of victory when David Howland in the 78th minute, a second from Dodds in the 85th minute, and a 90th minute free kick from Marc Richards gave the spoils to our 4th division opposition.

I am now in hiding.

Our temporary gaffer is philisophical.....

The jungle-drums have been beating loudly on a couple of fronts. The main consensus of opinion about Stans departure seems to be that maybe he was wanting to wind down / scrap the Academy. Now I know from reading STs biography that he is no fan of Academies, thinks they are a drain on resources. If this is the source of the disagreement (sounds likely to me) then DH would have had to get rid. I am proud of our Academy, Gerry Murphy is doing a fine job, and it would be an outrage if it was to be finished.

The other matter in hand is of course Stan and Ronnies replacements. Interesting developments indicate that David Unsworth has expressed an interest. That would be a big gamble, ok I admit he has to start somewhere, and it is my understanding he taken coaching badges. It would still be a gamble though regardless, and I see this scenario as unlikely.

Other rumours insist that an as-yet un-named manager currently inn gainful employment has made a direct approach to Dean Hoyle. A chancer, or sparkling enterprise - you decide! A few names bandied about, Mark Robins (Rotherham), Jim Gannon (Stockport) Nigel Adkins (Scunthorpe). The whispers about A Boothroyd have quietened down since Tuesday.

So, I wonder. What exactly were those differences of opinion about "...taking the club forward..", particularly if in the long run he thinks Stan would have got us promotion. Any ideas? Dean says it will come out eventually but not yet.

Statement From the Boardroom

It's been six long months, more money spent since the Bruce/Rubery/Ayre era and no progress. Ronnie Jepson, Mick Docherty and Andrew Watson depart also.

Good riddance, despite the fact I am flu-ed up to the eyeballs I feel cured already!!!

It had to happen though, I'm not sure whether 3 points last Tuesday against Yeovil would have made any difference at all. Nice work Dean Hoyle, the correct decision.

Several knee-jerk reactions, with Watfords ex-boss Aidy Boothroyd supposedly topping Dean Hoyles wish-list - what nonsense, it is far, far too early to speculate on a successor. Lets just take stock, put Gerry Murphy in charge for the Port Vale FA Cup game on Saturday and see where we go.

Huddersfield Town 3-2 Crewe Alexandra

3 points at last as Town just edged out Crewe with a late winner. However if the score had remained 2-2 it would have been a huge injustice!

Town took a 2 goal lead, a bundled over the line effort from Andy Butler and an excellent curling shot from Ian Craney, and we easily had the measure of League Ones bottom side. However, the visitors go themselves back in it before halftime, when Clatyton Donaldson slotted into an empty net after Matt Glennon failed to gather.

The equaliser was simply a disgrace of the highest order. We've had some poor, poor linesmen at the Galpharm, but this one takes the biscuit. Donaldson had the ball played through to him - despite being at least 2 yards offside (he was in line with me, the linesman and the last defender were in line with the man 2 seats away). An incensed crowd refused to believe that the flag didn't come. The Crewe striker slotted the ball home with ease to the plain disgust of Town fans all round the ground (I was livid).

As it was it didn't cost us as 3 minutes from full time, an excellent effort from Kiegan Parker (my man of the match fwiw) meant all the points were ours. I'm glad the referee didn't see fit to send him off until after he had scored the winner though (2 yellows for two nothing challenges).

Been hearing more rumours about Stans attitude to players and staff alike, and it is not good. Although I stress these are only rumours (albeit from a very trusted source), I don't like it one bit.

A shivering Galpharm saw not the worst stalemate ever. What chances there were all fell to us, but the Yeovil keeper put in a man-of-the-match performance to keep shots from Liam Dickinson, Ian Craney, Nathan Clarke, Jon Worthington and Gary Roberts at bay. Danny Schofield appeared for Yeovil, but it was a least half an hour before I realised he was playing!!

One thing last nights game said to me was that we will not be going anywhere this season - we are not good enough. We will beat the strugglers, draw against the moderate sides and get thrashed by the better teams. Our season is going nowhere.

A few people in the DG Lower near me made their feelings known at full time, by making there way over to the dugouts hurling abuse at Stan and Ronnie. How much longer can Dean Hoyles patience hold out? Lets see what Saturday brings is probably what our Chairman-in-Waiting will say.

I have just about thawed out from last night, Christ it was cold. To add insult to injury I had to defrost my car when I got back to Crewe, so cold was it!! And while we are on the subject, my husband has stuck a curfew on night visits for now (bah). It has been a few seasons since I have travelled over for night matches, but increased hassle with trains (getting back after 12 most times) curtailed this practice of late. However, with a shiny new season ticket to use, and the fact I cannot always make a Saturday I made this trip (and for the Sheff U game).

Train problems resurfaced though, getting back from the Sheff United game was a doddle, straight off one train at Manchester, straight on one back to Crewe - back home just after 11, perfect. Not last night, even though the first train got back to Manchester okay I was horrified to see my connection heading out at the same time from the next platform along - missed it by 1 minute, meaning an hour wait for the next one, and the return to the after-midnight arrivals. I accept him being unhappy and the resons why. This was why I stopped coming over on a Tuesday night in the first place. Not sure what I'm going to do if this comes up again this season!

I did say this would happen. A performance every bit as bad as Oldham away last season, the match that saw Ritchie off, maybe this is the match that sees Stan off - we can only hope.

One way traffic of the highest order (the 949 who travelled have my sympathy), Aaron McClean on 12 minutes, George Boyd on 24 minutes, Chris Whelpdale on 55 minutes, and McCleans second on 64 minutes sinking us. Utter rubbish.

Dean Hoyle MUST act. He knows he must. We are going absolutely nowhere with this dinosaur Ternent in charge, and something must be done.

Wins against Yeovil and Crewe (assuming DH / KD don't do anything) will buy him a little time, but how much should he get. Not one say more, not one penny more. I am angered that good money has gone to waste on average players, and we as supporters deserve better.

It's our centenary and we are going down the pan fast here. It would be an outrage if we were to be in a relegation dogfight this season, and if Dean Hoyle can be persuaded to cut his losses, and get in someone young and dynamic with fresh ideas, then we may just salvage something this season before it is too late.

A kindly correspondent informs me that time is running out for Stan, that he has tomorrow, Tuesday against Yeovil, and the Saturday after against Crewe (I will be over for both those home games by the way) to bring home 9 points (or at the very least 7) or it could well be curtains.

I'm a bit calmer today then I was last night. I'm still not happy and want Stan gone though, it would be better all round if DH cut his losses and got rid.

I don't buy into the "..Stan will sort it out.." rubbish. With more money to spend (and still claiming we need more players) than the last 3 managers put together, and Roberts and Flynn aside bought average players no better then we had; if I were Dean Hoyle I would not give that man so much as another bean. He cannot be trusted with the clubs money that is obvious.

For the cynical, I would have still been of this opinion if we had won. Ternent has always been a poor appointment in my eyes, I did not want him at the club for footballing reasons and having read his book did not want him for personal reasons either!!!

I hope we can turn it around, of course I do. Onwards to Peterborough, lets hope we can finally start to get it right.

Hartlepool United 5-3 Huddersfield Town

Thought it was unbelievable at half time, this scoreline is even more unbelieveable. Town 3-2 to the good at the break, two free kicks from Liam Dickenson (he hit the post with another one) and an Ian Craney effort, goals from Kevin Kyle (despite the best efforts of N Clarke on the line) and James Brown keeping the home side in it at the break.

With 10 minutes left it looked like the second half would remail goal-less and we would get 3 needed points, but as you might expect thigs never go our way. The linesman gave a penalty (harshly according to the radio) against Joe Skarz, and that was the turning point. Joel Porter sank the spot kick, and Hartlepool had their tails up.

Within 2 minutes they were in front, Kevin Kyle bagged his second of the night, rising above Andy Butler and Joe Skarz to head powerfully home.

The woe was not to end there, when Joel Porter wrapped up the proceedings with a tap into an empty net after dancing round an out-rushing Matt Glennon.

I am completely shell shocked.

Huddersfield Town 1-1 Bristol Rovers

Typical third Division fare yesterday, some meaty tackles flying in, not many chances, a draw a fair result I would say.

Town in front early on, a trademark piledriver from Michael Flynn from just outside the box. Not too many Town chances after that, only Flynn again going close with a headed chance. A combination of woeful Rovers finishing and Matt Glennon (as our defence was awful) keeping Town in front at the break.

Bristol equalised just after half time, Joe Skarz (not for the first time) beaten for pace, the cross fell to Rickie Lambert, who scored one of the easiest goals he will ever score. Our defence non existant yet again.

Both Town and Rovers pushed for a winner, although it never looked likely as Liam Dickenson was dreadful yesterday - more concerned with manhandling the opposition centre half than winning the ball. A draw, as I said, a fair result.

Steve Jones got 90 minutes yesterday, which surprised me as I felt he would have made way at some point, but he impressed me yesterday with his endevour. He looked for all the world a natural-born-Town-player, as if he had been playing for us since forever. You can tell he's played at a higher level. I put this to a Crewe supporting pal last night. He nearly spat his beer out in derision "..you're f****** welcome to him hehehehe..", his considered reply.

Funny that, I always though he was highly regarded at Crewe, maybe not then.

Last night when watching "Big League Weekend 2" on Sky Sports, he was heard to comment during highlights of Lincoln v Rochdale "..I see that silly old bugger Jackson is up to no good again.." as footage of PJ being sent to the stands during that game from Friday night appeared. Swindon Town 1-3 Huddersfield Town

Some welcome relief against a relatively poor Swindon side. We were in front in the 6th minute, with another goal from Liam Dickinson. From a corner, Andy Butler pulled the ball back for Dicko to slot home.

Then, possibly the turning point of the game. Andy Butler fouled Swindon midfielder Michael Timlin in the area to concede a penalty, but Matt Glennon was too good for Simon Cox, saving the resulting spot kick by guessing correctly that he would put it to the right.

Huddersfield two goals up not long after, Gary Roberts scoring an extraordinary goal. Glennons long punt upfield had the Swindon defenders on the hop as Robbo nipped in and scored on the volley straight from it!

All Huddersfield pretty much from that moment, and the three points were sealed in the second half, when Ian Craneys shot was cleared off the line, only to fall straight to Michael Flynn who didn't even take a touch as he volley home spectacularly from 20 yards into the top corner of the net.

Craig Easton scored a consolation for the home side with a couple of minutes left, however it was an afternoons work well done for our boys - lets hope this is the start of things to come.

Darlington 1-0 Huddersfield Town

A lacklustre performance, by a team much butchered from Saturday (one Radio Leeds wag said we had a twelve year old in goal and a back 4 with a combined age of 141), meant an early exit for Town. The Darlington goal aside, the main talking point was Gary Roberts challenge on Ricky Ravenhill. Although the Town man won the ball, he also caught Ravenhill on the knee with his follow through, and even though no Darlington players angrily rounded on Robbo (indicating it was purely accidental), the referee showed him a red card.

The goal came on the stroke of half time from a free kick, centre half Alan White heading home.

Nearest Town came second half was when Andy Butler hit the bar with a header, but Town never looked a real threat at any stage, and Stan Ternent has some serious questions to answer before Swindon on Saturday - not least, who is going to replace our star man Gary Roberts?

Huddersfield Town 2-3 Leicester City

A spirited fightback by Town ended in vain, as an outrageous piece of fortune saw Leicester take all 3 points at a windswept Galpharm.

A first half with chances for both sides , Roberts and Dickenson going close for Town, Matty Fryatt for Leicester, but ultimately goaless.

Leicester broke the deadlock just after half time, that man Fryatt on the end of a good passing move, his shot just evading Matt Glennon. The lead was doubled when Jim Goodwins careless hand blocked a Leicester cross, and it was Fryatt once more who stepped up to put the penalty away.

Those who though Town were dead and buried at this point were thankfully wrong as Gary Roberts gave us a chink of light with his fourth goal of the season. The comeback was completed on 77 minutes when Liam Dickenson headed home Jim Goodwins cross powerfully.

An almighty fluke cost Town dear right on full time, Lloyd Dyer somehow managing to loop the ball over Matt Glennon while falling backwards at the same time. Town did not deserve this after an excellent performance.

This is more like it, a result of note and an excellent performance to boot. Slowly but surely we are getting there!!

First blood to Town, a long pass from Nathan Clarke, finding Phil Jevons who knocked it into Liam Dickenson and whose blocked shot landed in the path of Ian Craney and gave the Oldham keeper no chance from a dozen yards out.

Town continued to press, Ian Craney and Liam Dickenson working hard to try and find a second, but sadly it wasn't to be. The only Oldham chance of note ending in a goal; Jim Goodwin conceding the free kick, Andy Lidell splittling the wall with the shot and beating anunsighted Matt Glennon.

Chances for Phil Jevons, Michael Flynn and Liam Dickenson came to nothing, but we would have all taken a point if offered pre-match. An excellent perfomance, much improved - hopefully more of the same to come - are we turning the corner at long last? Are the new players finally gelling?? Certainly Stan thinks so.

Huddersfield Town 3-2 Northampton Town

A win at last for Town, although it was a little more one sided than the scoreline suggests with us being well on top for most of the match.

Northampton the first to score though, a low cross deflected off Jim Goodwin and looped over Matt Glennon to gift The Cobblers an own goal after 23 minutes.

Town on terms not long after, Andy Booth back in the line up. Lovely build up involving Michael Flynn and Liam Dickenson, Ian Craineys blocked shot arrived at the feet of Boothy who made no mistake with his close range shot. 1-1 at half time.

Michael Flynn put Town in front; Jon Worthingtons forward run finding Liam Dickenson, who slotted the ball to Flynn and his shot was out of the reach of the Northampton keeper. Flynn extended Towns lead, a shot from 30 yards creeping under the body of Northampton keeper Chris Dunn.

Liam Davis grabbed a goal back deep in added time, but Town got all 3 points (phew).

I still haven't stopped fuming from Saturday.

I cannot believe I am still hearing "...it's only 6 games, Stan can turn it around...". First of all, he had the last few matches of last season (in a watching capacity) and all of pre season as well to get it right. I'm not holding my breath for improvement, I really am not.

Too much tinkering with the side doesn't help. Ok, if players are injured (Boothy, Butler, Cads) there is not a lot you can do, but a more settled side wouldn't go a miss. Why has ST got it in for Kiegan Parker for instance, no one seems to know. Why is he playing Flynn out of position on the wing, when he had his best game for us by far against Sheffield United in the cup playing centre midfield.

Dickenson, although he scored a belter on Saturday, well, I don't see the point of him. N Clarke hoofing it up to him is a waste of time as he can't head for toffee, and his little layoffs / flicks are the sort of things C Brandon was pilloried for - Jevons needs to be playing, and I also hear that Malvin has been playing well for the reserves, so maybe time for another chance for him too.

No matter what, Northampton is must win. If we were to lose on Saturday I would expect Stans head on a platter, nothing less.

Huddersfield Town 1-2 Tranmere Rovers

A disgraceful performance. Awful beyond words second half, we should have lost by many many more, and would have done had Tranmere taken their chances. We were woeful.

In front courtesy of a piledriver of a free kick from Liam Dickenson, that was far too hot for the Rovers keeper to handle. Nearly 2 up not long after, a bullet header from Nathan Clarke after a well taken corner only kept out by an excellent save.

That was as good as it got for Town. Tranmere on terms before half time, Edrissa Sonko beating (a slightly unsighted I thought) Matt Glennon while a static Town defence watched.

Second half, and one of the worst performances from a Town side I can remember. 11 individuals does not make a team, and we were made to pay as Ryan Shotton headed home unmarked to give the win to Rovers.

I am fuming at this, Stan is to blame, although if you read his comments he clearly does not think so.

Cheltenham Town 1-2 Huddersfield Town

A tale of two halves most definitely. First half, Town ineffective, poor, didn't test the keeper much, one behind after a mistake from Chris Lucketti let in Lloyd Owusu. It wasn't looking good, and another defeat was on the cards.

One substitution made the difference, and Kiegan Parker changed the game completely after replacing an uninspiring Phil Jevons. Town looked in control at last, and reward came when Nathan Clarkes shot levelled the scores.

We didn't have to wait long for a winner, and it was Ian Craney who scored his debut goal for Town - and a fine effort it was too, a superb 25 yard effort to send the 433 travellers home happy (although at half time they were probably wondering why they bothered).

Just the boost we needed, and hopefully the result will spring us into action - good stuff (phew).

Do we need a win or what. One thing Dean Hoyle said on Wednseday that once we get the first win we will be flying as the pressure will be off. Lets hope it is tomorrow, although we won down there last season I still have nightmares about that pass of Pavs a few seasons back (a day I remember just as well for scaring the living daylights of a rather timid betting shop cashier after Boothy had scored).

Last nights Patrons meeting was extremely interesting by all accounts - particularly as the guest was Dean Hoyle. Here are a few points answered by our chairman in waiting (thanks to Marcus Middleton for the information):

Stan knows that the academy won’t help him be successful in the short term, it’s the First XI that always keeps managers in jobs and the results they get. The academy can bring a trickle of talent through, but the club needed new blood and new attitudes.
The First XI and the Academy have crossed swords, Stan & Gerry have crossed swords. There have been differences of opinion, but Stan met with Gerry at The Barn on Monday and they have sat and chatted and discussed things in order to move on. The club are fully aware of their differences and they are being monitored as they don’t want any skirmishes to put off future talent joining our academy.
As a fan Dean is “pissed off” with our current league position but he has every confidence in Stan, his staff, and the players to turn it around and once we get that first win we will be flying as the pressure will be lifted. Stan is notoriously slow to get out of the blocks, but he has always got results with a bit of patience etc.
The wage budget has increased from £1.7m last season to £3.25m this season. We are currently at that level. New players could come in to take us over that budget in the short term but they want to be prudent and stay within budget in the long term. There is still money available signings/transfer budget though. So really in the future, ideally, a player will have to leave to free up wages to bring in another signing etc. Dean has personally provided the funds for the transfer budget (which suggests that he and Ken are jointly responsible for the wage budget) and as such it is his decision on how much money could be made available if/when he needs to support Stan in the transfer market.
We had a £850k bid for Stead turned down at the start of the season as Sheff Utd were unsure what was happening with their other strikers at the time. We bid again after the League Cup game but Sheff Utd advised us to leave him alone….a few days later he signs on loan for Ipswich. At that price Stead would have been “good business”.
We’ve had a slow start but all teams have blips at one time or another, we just happen to have had one at the start of the season. He backs Stan 100%, but he realises he has to back him as he is his manager and he has upmost faith in him. He didn’t think initially that Stan was the right man (Ken & Watson chose him….. Watson previously worked with him at Burnley) but he has now changed his mind after having worked with him; he is the right man to be in charge and he will get the team back on track in the league.

One point that caught my eye is the interest in Jon Stead. Where will the win come from? 4 games, no wins, 2 draws, we are bottom of League One - no wonder after this performance.

Town in front after 18 minutes, Liam Dickenson opening his Town account with a spectacular overhead kick, but that was as good as it got. Millwall equalised before half time, Tresor Kandol heading home a deep cross past a static Matt Glennon.

The winner came in the second half, Unsworth and Clarke getting in each others way, allowed the ball to be played through to Lewis Grabban who calmly slipped the ball under Glennon.

Town were thrown a lifeline in the 90th minute when awarded a penalty for a clumsy challenge on Michael Collins. David Unsworth (who I am told by an Evertonian never missed a penalty in 5 years while at Goodison) stepped up to take it (despite our recognised penalty-taker Phil Jevons being on the pitch), his strong shot though was straight at the Millwall keeper, and an undeserved point was not to be ours.

Everything Stan says at the moment infuriates me at the moment. Who does he think he is, been at the club 5 minutes and telling everyone "..it's my way or the highway..". From what I've seen ST is creating problems we didn't have!! We still have no-one who can play on the left wing effectively, our right backs are rubbish and Andy Holdsworth should be back in midfield where we got the very best of him last season.

With all the money he's spent I expected to see some results by now (I know it's only 4 games in, but bottom of the league with no wins is unacceptable). Leaves me wistfully wondering what might have been had Dean Hoyles money been available to Peter Jackson 2 years ago. At least we all know well that Jacko had Town well and truly at heart, something Andy Ritchie never had, and something I have yet to see from Stan Ternent. I'm worried even at this early stage.

I mentioned a little earlier on this week how we were supposed to be signing a left winger from Dagenham & Redbridge - nothing has come of it as the player concerned, Dominic Green, decided to join Peterborough instead, seems his agent got him a better deal (and more money for himself in the process I shouldn't wonder). Stan is far from happy at this behaviour predictably.

The score does not tell the story of this game. For most neutrals seeing the result they would probably assume it would be a true reflection, after all they are a league above us. But for 80 minutes of this match we were in charge completely, outplaying and bossing all over the pitch. A nonsense of a substitution changed things, and all the good work was unravelled.

Chance after chance for Town, Nathan Clarke missed two clear cut headers, we could have been 3 or 4 up no problem, but it was just a loveley piece of individual skill from Michael Flynn that seperated the two teams for most of this game, an excellent shot from 20 yards beating Blades keeper Ian Bennett after the 1/2 hour mark.

One substitution changed the game. Town had played 4-4-2 all night, and it had worked a treat with Messers Lucketti and Clarke cutting out any threat at the back, and Cadders, Roberts and Parker looking lively upfront. But for some unexplained reason Stan thought that 5 in midfield was the way to close out the game (how wrong can you be gaffer), and took off the hard working Luke Beckett in exchange for Jim Goodwin, leaving Cadders on his own upfront.

It was that decision that cost us victory, amazing how we fell apart. We totally lost our shape, and ultimately the game, when two goals in 3 minutes from Darius Henderson (after he had turned the ineffectual Robbie Williams) and a deflected effort from Kyle Naughton sunk Town.

Been trying to make sense of recent goings on, but didn't really want this post descending into a rant!! It has only been three games after all, however all does not look well. A plethora of central midfielders, no solution to the "..no left winger.." problem, Andy Holdsworth playing at right back (when on last seasons form he should be in midfield), rumours of discontent from the dressing room (and only rumours in case you are reading this Stan). Not promising.

From what I hear we should expect another signing (yes, yet another) tomorrow, this time a left winger from Dagenham and Redbridge. Hopefully the missing bit of the jigsaw!

I suppose expecting all those new players to gel straightaway is a bit much to ask, and maybe we should see where we are after 10 games (we might even still be in the League Cup as well by then, you never know) and complain then if nothing improves.

I expect the fact that we are 23rd in League One is nothing more than a temporary blip and we will put it all together eventually. But cheap season tickets or not, I do not expect attendances to rise past 13,000 at the moment. I will be at the Tranmere game Sept 13th, and I'm hoping we will have a couple of league wins under our belt by then. Playing Jevons would help, but if he is one appearance away from an extra £25,000 to Bristol City and not-Stans-sort-of-player it probably wont happen.

Wouldn't do any harm sending the likes of Berrett, Killock and even Tom Clarke out on loan, it would send out a bold statement by the gaffer by saying that although he has brought in new players, the youngsters we already have are important for the future, let them get some experience elsewhere. I think any offer for Luke Beckett would see him gone soon as well (transfer window shuts soon though).

Oh well, onwards to Wednesday and our cup game against Sheffield United.....

A lukewarm performance against last seasons League Two champions, I'm glad I wasn't there. Two down before half time, Jude Stirling from a corner and Peter Leven after a breakaway that saw 5 MK Dons players against just Andy Holdsworth and Matt Glennon - dreadful.

3 behind after 64 minutes, Sam Waldock slotting the ball through Glennons legs to compound the misery.

Consolation near the end when Gary Roberts scored, but too little too late.

It's not looking good.

A coupple of small pieces of housekeeping prior to Saturdays game. It seems the club has been taking notice as regards the pitch announcer as the stand-in has now been given the gig "..for the forseeable future..".

Don't expect Phil Jevons to figure, as crafty old Stan has sussed that he is one appearance away from us owing Bristol City another £25,000 in fees. If he isn't Stans sort of player then there would be little or no hope of being picked (despite netting 2 for the reserves against Leeds in the week). Shame really as I rated him.

Signing number 8 - a gamble this one, as young Tom Denton is being recruited on potential and little else. He is a tall lad (think Peter Crouch), big Town fan (Boothy is his hero), and we beat off Crystal Palace and Blackburn Rovers. Not that much of a decision for the lad once he knew we were interested I suspect.

£100k is a lot for a non league teenager who was plying his trade for Wakefield FC, but if he fulfills his potential (and everyone I've heard from says he will do without question) that could be rather cheap. I trust Stans judgement, now lets see what he can do.

After a solid first half, Town completely obliterated our near neighbours with 4 goals without reply - a rout!

Jon Worthington scored with a header from a Robbie Williams cross in the 48th minute, Gary Roberts (MOTM again) made it two with a beautiful solo effort, splitting the Bradford defence in half, on 62 minutes. 75 minutes and it was all over as a contest when a Robbie Williams free kick found the back of the net, and it was Roberts again who ended proceedings by adding a fourth (pinching it off the toe of Danny Cadamarteri who would have loved to have scored against his former club) with 10 minutes to go.

Nights do not get much sweeter than this!!!

Honours even at a damp Galpharm, when a new look Town side (6 of the new signings played) just couldn't find an opening day winner.

How apt in our centenary season that the opening goal be scored by Andy Booth. Gary Roberts (man of the match at a canter, more about this after) floated in the corner, and Boothy was on the end of it with a trademark header on the half hour mark.

Town almost went two up not long after, an excellent free kick from Roberts making County keeper fon Williams work hard to keep his side in the contest.

Disaster right on half-time, just as the pitch announcer (more about him after as well) was declaring "..the fourth official has indicated there will be 1 minute of added time..", a static Town defence watched as Tommy Rowe tapped the ball home from close range. There wasn't even time to kick off again!

Town had a few chances second half, but couldn't hit the target. Stockport came close to a winner as well, Matty Glennon making one acrobatic save to keep things level.

Some housekeeping...........

Ok, not the greatest performance ever seen, but I admit it was good to be back at The Galpharm. Of the new players, Gary Roberts was immense. He is going to be some signing, if consistent though it will be hard to hang onto him though. I thought all our new players contributed something yesterday, I like Jim Goodwin and David Unsworth (hope he signs), and although it was a bit if a stutter yesterday it is early days. Give the team ten games and see where they are then.

The new pitch announcer was amazing, shame that he is only a stand in for the new Welsh guy. Town have dropped a clanger big style, they have clearly employed the wrong person. I have emailed the club, that is how strongly I feel about this. He showed no nerves, the banter he had with the crowd, and the away fans as well, was superb.

Half time entertainment - I think the car people will sleep easy, it'll never be won. 30 yards away? More like 50!!! Still, its a bit of fun and I enjoyed it very much.

The big screen is brilliant. To those who think there are too many adverts - how else do you think we are going to re-coup any of the dough we shelled out for it, it's a no-brainer. I really enjoyed the montage of old Town footage before the game as well. Not sure there is any point in showing the game "..as it happens.." though, and I missed seeing the latest scores, something I hope will be rectified.

Matchday at long last - and the weather is appalling!!! It's been persisting down with rain all morning, a far cry from the weather we had last time we played Stockport on the first day of the season 4 years ago. I was one of the poor souls behind the goal at Edgeley Park that day, and with typical blonde-negligence gone out unprotected - the sunburn I suffered is almost too painful to forget!! Of course we won (just *laughs*) that day, and I would be a bit miffed if we didn't get all 3 points today. No disrespect to Stockport, I suspect we might just be a goal or two too good for them.

The new season is only one day away, and Stan is hoping to make at least one more signing - triallist David Unsworth, though if you read what the Gaffer says closely it looks like money is the sticking point.

Safe to assume that Unsworth (or his agent) is asking for top dollar. Knowing full well that he is wanted, and using that as a bargaining tool. It would be a shame if some middle ground could not be found between our estimate and his.

Who is going to do well in League One this season. It's easy (and a bit lazy) to say that the relegated teams have the best chance for a return. I disagree however. I expect Leicester to be there or thereabouts, but cannot see any chance of a quick promotion for Scunthorpe or Colchester.

It grieves me to say it but Leeds have to figure don't they (except when they play us), and of the League 2 promotees it will be likely that Peterbrough will do the best.

To go down? Probably Hereford and Hartlepool, although I can see Millwall struggling. My near-neighbours Crewe Alex missed relegation by a gnats eyelash last season, however (and it grieves me to say this as well) I don't think they will figure in the basement scrap this time.

As for Towns prospects - well, as usual play-offs will have to be minimum, but I can definitely see us doing better than that. I can see us in the top 2 easily as long as we don't lose key players, and the new boys gel early. A Centenary season to remember? Why the hell not.

BONUS!!! Despite the fact I am very much at work, I spotted one of the TVs we have in the office tuned to Arsenal TV of all things. After negotiating, I managed to get a TV a bit nearer to me to show the same, so I am able to watch the game (while working, naturally).

It is half time at present - 0-0. From what I have seen, Town have more than held their own, Cadders looks very lively, the defence seem to be holding up, Matt Glennon only had one save (I saw) to make. Very promising!!!

Tonight sees our Herbert Chapman Trophy encounter against Arsenal, although if I had been one of the 15,000 or so who had bought tickets I would have been a little miffed at the "side" that The Gunners are putting out.

To be honest, it's almost mis-representation. A more realistic way to advertise tonight would have been Town v Arsenal XI, or Town v Arsenal Acadamy, so bereft is the squad. Complaints? Form an orderly queue!! On the team list I saw, I only recognised Theo Walcotts name, although I admit I don't follow Arsenal that closely. The fact that many Town fans think Wenger is taking the proverbial means there are not too many on the list who will be familiar.

A big crowd, live on Setanta and then they do that. I'm sure there will be many, many Town fans who may feel a little short-changed.

Town get back to winning ways against The Blades (including J Stead of course). Sheff United took the lead in the 12th lead when veteran Gary Speed headed home a long throw in.

Town on terms in the 28th minute, Michael Flynn finding Danny Cadamarteri who put the ball between Uniteds keeper Paddy Kennys legs. 1-1 at half time.

A flurry of substitutions for both sides, and it was from the bench that Towns winner came. A mis-placed clearance from the United defence allowed Keigan Parker to hammer a sweet volley into the net for victory!!

Friendly action again today with a noon kick off against Sheffield United (a quick chance for Chris Lucketti to face his old teammates). Now I am off work today, as I will be next Saturday, however as in other years my Other Half frowns on me travelling over for friendlies so I'm stuck at home (counting down the days.....).
